Your Favorite Movie

Everyone has their favorites, well what is your favorite movie? Everyone has one, whether it be a tear jerker, a comedy, or a action thriller. My favorite movie is “The Shawshank Redemption.” It is a drama that was made in 1994, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. A banker(played by Tim Robbins) is wrongly accused of the murder of his wife and her lover after he catches her cheating on him. He is then sentenced to serve two decades in Shawshank State Prison. He then meets Red(played by Morgan Freeman) and is looking to escape from prison as he knows his innocence. Andy(the banker) finds out about the wardens money laundering operation and finds himself being used in it.

“The Shawshank Redemption,” is a longer movie at 124minutes, but you are captured by the great story that is being told throughout the movie. I enjoy this movie because of the story, and of how well each actor played their character I enjoyed this movie so much I even performed a monologue in high school that was spoken by Morgan Freeman’s character. I really hope that you all check out this movie, as I am sure that you will enjoy it.

This leads to the question, what is your favorite movie? why is it your favorite?

Swag

You hear everyone talking about how much “swag” or “swagger” one has. Well Im wondering, what exactly defines how much swag one has. Is it the kind of clothes they wear? Their shoes? Who actually gets to decide how much swag someone has anyways? Is it because they have the highest level of swag. Who knows. I’ve never met them. The word swag has become very mainstream as of late, being used in songs, shows, and everyday life. I personally believe that your swag, or swagger comes from your confidence or lack there of. Your ability to not be shy, go out and socialize and just do whatever it is you do on a daily basis. What are your thoughts on the rapid surgence of the word swag? What do you think gives someone ‘x’ amount of swagger.

High School Football Scandal

Last week Frank Hurt Secondary School, which is my former high school, had their last football practice of the season as they were forced to forfeit two games which took them out playoff contention and also meant that they were done for the year. What caused this all to happen was the suspicion that they were playing with two ineligible players. After a call from one of thier opponents coaches to the league, the league then looked into it and eventually found out that two players on the Hornets were both born in 1993, which means that they should have graduated last year. The rule on this subject formally stated that a player who graduated and is coming back to play one more season and repeating grade 12 may play, unless they have already played the full five years of football at high school. Which would make these players both eligible because I played with both of them and this season would be one of the players fifth season of football and the others third season. However, before this season started the league changed the rule making it illegal for any players repeating grade 12 in British Columbia to play high school unless they are coming from another province. The rule change also now states that the five years of eligibility to play football starts once the player begins grade 8 and is up to them to take advantage of the opportunity to play. Under this rule change the two football players are ineligible to play football for the high school.

It is really unfortunate to hear this as it is the high school I graduated from and won a championship with last year. I really feel for all of the grade 12’s as it was their last season in high school football and last chance to win anything. I still keep in contact with some of the players, and they are all unbelievably upset and are in shock that thier season ended on these terms. My cousin plays for the team and he was really pissed off because he felt like they could have done some damage in the playoffs. Luckily for him, he still has one more year to go. As for the state of the team, they will be reinstated for next season and able to play.

A Great Honor

On Tuesday, November 8th, I received news from my football coach that I had been selcted to the VMFL All-Star Game, as a First Team All-Star. He had also told me that I was the first Lineman selected and I will be starting Center in the game, sometime in March or April. 6 players from my team were selected to the game, including 2 of my good friends. The location of the game is undetermined, but it will be held in March or April. My team will have two-a-day practices for a week, one in the morning for two hours, then another two hour practice in the afternoon. We will be fed Subway and Gatorade, which I am looking very forward to, because Subway is the most delicious thing in the world. After the week of practice, we will play an All-Star game on the Sunday. This is a chance for everyone in the game to show case their skill in front of coaches and scouts from across Canada and possibly the States.

Even though this is my first year playing Community football, after playing five years of high school football, being named to the StarBowl is a great honor. After talking to a few of my teammates, and getting a good sense of how important it is to represent the North Surrey Football Association, I am truly honored to be selected to the StarBowl as a representative of the North Surrey Bears. All I can do is try my best, make my coaches proud, and who knows, maybe i’ll get noticed and get a phone call.

Type 1 Diabetes Awareness Month

The month of November isn’t just “MOvember” or No Shave November. It is also Type 1 Diabetes awareness month, supported by the Juvenile Diabetes Reasearch Foundation (JDRF). I have had type 1 diabetes for 5 years now. It does quite the toll ones body, as is it a complete lifestyle change. I take shots of insulin 3 times a day, with 4 needles. It is something that I had to come accustom to as it was going to be that way for the rest of my life. Not too many people are aware of how serious diabetes is. So I’ll tell you a little about it.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 (Juvenile) diabetes in 2006, the symptoms were those of the flu, which is why diabetes is so hard to recognize, without getting blood work done. My blood sugar was ridicolously high. Normally it should be between 4 – 8, howver mine was HI on the meter, so that means it was unreadable, or above 34. After being diabetic, I’ve had to make some huge changes to my life, cutting out things like slurpees, chocolate (unless sugar free of course), and regular pop. I have not had a can of regular pop since 2006. I also have to count carbohydrates when eating food, it was difficult at first, but I have managed to do so.

As you can see myself and many others in this world, deal with not a disease, but a lifestyle. according to JDRF, in the states, 1 in 4 have diabetes or will get diabetes. All I ask is that you become aware about diabetes and its effects, and maybe change your lifestyle a little bit too.

How I Met Your Mother

I recently borrowed seasons 1 through 6 of “How I Met Your Mother” from a friend. It is now becoming my favourite show. Every episode is funny, there isn’t one where I am not laughing. I am currently on Episode 3 of Season 4.

Barney Stinson (played by Neil Patrick Harris) is my favourite character, and makes the show. He is always dressed up in a suit, which he calls “suiting up”, no matter the occasion, even if it’s laser tagging. He is the biggest player out there, always lying to woman so he can get with them. He also abides by the “bro code,” which is a book that says what bros can and cannot do. One must never break the bro code. Currently in the new season, which is the 7th, Barney is getting married. Although he is dating a woman named Nora so far this season, they still haven’t revealed his bride, as in episode 1 of season 7 they jumped into a whole new story, waiting until the end of the season to reveal it.

I think what makes the show so funny is the diversity between the characters. Every character in the show has a different job, and whenever stories are told, everyone has a different view on what happened. Also, I really like how the whole series, season by season ties in together in the end, with Ted finally meeting his wife and the mother of his kids. What also makes it funny is how Ted sees almost every girl he dates as “the one,” but ends up breaking up with them. I encourage everyone to check out How I Met Your Mother, as I am sure you will all enjoy it.

Lions Keep Surging

As a huge football fanatic, and in the midst of football season. I think its only fitting that I make this post about my favourite football team; The BC Lions.

After a 1 – 5 start to the 2011 campaign, the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League, currently are sitting in 1st place in the West Division. Everything was looking down for the Lions. Their offense couldn’t put up points, their defense couldn’t stop an offense if their lives depended on it, and they couldn’t buy a win.

After the Lions made some needed changes to the defense including the key aquisitions of Defensive Backs, Tad Kornegay, Jerome Dennis and Defensive Tackle Khalif Mitchell, things started to look up for the Leos defense, as opponents were scoring less and less each game. While the defense was make moves, the offense made some some key moves as well, aquiring allstar Wide Receiver Arland Bruce from the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. What Bruce brought to the Lions was the much needed double threat at the Receiver position, teaming up with arguably the best Receiver the game has seen Geroy Simon, they create a threat like none other. Another small, but key move was moving former, Vancouver Island Raider Andrew Harris to starting Running Back, and sitting the ineffective Jamal Robertson. Quarterback Travis Lulay has improved a great amount as well, gaining a new level of confidence, on and off the field, and has assumed the leader role on the Lions.

Since starting with 1 win and 5 losses the BC Lions have dominated the CFL, winning 7 straight games and only losing once since the terrible start, and now hold a record of 9 wins and 6 losses. After no one had them even making the playoffs, many analysts have now predicted the Lions to win the West Division and possibly The 99th Grey Cup, which will be hosted in BC. This is a classic act of never giving up, and always working hard and keeping faith, no matter how bad things get.

Aftermath Review

I went to Aftermath for lunch with a friend, it was my first time stepping into the socialhouse. My first thoughts on it were that it was very inviting. I really enjoyed the interior decor, as it gave me a very mellow feeling. The service was fantastic as we were seated right away, and the waitress was right there to take our orders. She wasnt pushy or rushing us at all, and was very pleasant to deal with, very friendly and was smiling the whole time. I had the Mozza Sticks, while my friend enjoyed his Jersey Shore panini. The Mozza Sticks were absolutely delicious and a good sized portion for what you pay. The prices were very reasonable, and not expensive whatsoever. I would definitely recommend Aftermath to anyone who is looking for somewhere to go after class and have a drink, some food, and good laughs with friends. Great Job Aftermath! My rating would be a 5/5

Welcome to My World

Hello everyone, my name is Anthony Scardera, and welcome to my world. This is an introduction to my life and my hopes for the future. I am 18 years old from Surrey, British Columbia. I have two younger brothers. My life is all about sports and music. I played hockey for 10 years, winning a High School championship, a USA tournament and multiple individual accolades awards. I also play football and am currently in my sixth season. I have won one High School championship, and fittingly, it was in my Senior year. I now have given up hockey to focus on football, as I felt I would have a better opportunity to make it in football rather than hockey. My goal is to play Junior football next season and my dream is to play in the CFL one day. What would make this dream even more surreal, is if it were playing for the BC Lions.

I really enjoy rap and hiphop music. I love the story that artists tell in there music, and no, not every song is about getting girls, money, and drugs. I look beyond that and really enjoy the message that is presented in front of me. The artists that are on my playlists are Kanye West, Jay-z, J Cole, Lil Wayne, Eminem, and a few more. I also enjoy putting beats together and mashing up songs, just a little something I like to do in my spare time.

My career goal is to become a sports broadcaster. I have wanted to become one since I was eight years old and I haven’t changed my mind since. I think its a perfect match, considering my love for sports. I hope to work for TSN one day and eventually own my own sports radio talk show. I have already been a guest on a 30 minute hockey talk show where we discussed numerous NHL topics. The feedback to it was overwhelming as I got lots of praise and congratulatory messages on Twitter. I even got a couple phone calls from other talk shows, one in the United States and the other in Alberta, asking for me to be a guest on their shows respectively. I really hope that this is the beginning and hopefully there is much more to come, as I have the passion and knowledge to make it far in the industry.
